Diabetic Foot – A Serious Complication of Diabetes
Diabetic foot is a severe complication of diabetes mellitus, characterized by various disorders affecting the feet, including ulcers, infections, and, in advanced cases, gangrene. If not properly managed, these complications can lead to lower limb amputation.
Risk Factors and Complications
Diabetes can cause the following conditions that specifically affect the feet:
✔ Nerve damage (neuropathy) – Reduces the ability to perceive external stimuli (trauma, heat/cold, etc.) and affects foot function, leading to abnormalities in bones, muscles, blood vessels, and skin.
✔ Blood vessel damage (arteriopathy) – Impairs both the function and structure of nerves, bones, muscles, and skin, reducing blood circulation.
✔ Weakened immune system – High blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) increase the risk of frequent and severe infections compared to healthy individuals.
As a result, injuries that may seem minor in healthy individuals can become serious and difficult to detect in diabetics, increasing the risk of severe complications, including amputation.
Prevention and Care
To prevent complications, the following measures are essential:
✔ Proper blood sugar control – Reduces the risk of complications and must be managed with the help of a diabetologist.
✔ Daily foot care – Includes hygiene and regular inspection. For individuals with limited mobility, assistance is recommended.
✔ Proper footwear – Shoes should be wider than the foot, especially in the toe area, with rounded tips to avoid friction. The sole should be soft and thick to minimize pressure on the foot.
✔ Never walk barefoot – Due to reduced sensitivity, even minor injuries at home can lead to severe complications.
